Week 48

Goodmorning wonderful people! Another eventful week here for Sister Miles! Guess what? I had a cold all week :) yes, I have been sick this whole transfer. It's been a rough one. 

Last Monday we went down to Butte and spent time there with some of the other missionaries and played some games. I went all out with pod ball as usual. 

Tuesday was a big finding day as well as some lessons here and there. We had a lesson with Tim and he's so close to baptism! We had to take him off date because he expressed that he just needs to take his time. He came to church Sunday though! It was amazing! This week we have our ward Christmas party and Tim will be playing Santa so he is excited about that. We also made the 30 minute drive out to the Perkins home for dinner that night! I just adore their kids. They love me just like family which is comforting to me. At the end of dinner the kids asked us if we would help decorate their tree so we stayed with the time we had left and did that. At the end the kids ended up decorating me instead of the tree. These moments are what matter. That night we went to the Ebels home and visited with them. They used to be on date for baptism but had some concerns. They now are taking the lessons again! Their household is nuts! They have about 20 people coming and going everyday. The quote in my subject line is from them, that explains their characters. I love them! 

Wednesday was good ole zone conference! This was the Christmas zone conference so it was extra special. We made the drive down to Helena and were there until about two. There was a talent show at the end (which I just watched) and it was the bomb. After we had got done eating we each got goody bags with some gifts from the mission and letters! Yes I cried. We then had a slideshow prepared for us that had each missionary in the mission with a baby picture or another picture of some sort that our parents sent in. It was embarrassing because now the whole mission has seen my past features haha. After all that we drove back to Deer Lodge and had a few great lessons! 

Thursday we weekly planned and had a few other things we had to do before we went off to do service at the senior center! It's always a fun time there! We were so busy there that we were going into our dinner time and ended up only with 15 minutes for dinner since we had a lesson right after service. It's was hectic! We had a great lesson with one of my all time favorite investigators (john because he's ornery like me). The lesson at first was rocky but at the end we invited him to be baptized on January 20th and he accepted! He agreed to read and more! After we invited him to be baptized he said "okay but I get to be naked". At this point I smacked myself on the face but wasn't surprised that he said that. Typical John. Now John is a very proud guy. During the lesson he was being stubborn and all of the sudden it was quiet and he was staring me in the eyes and I said "you need to be more humble". I was like DID I JUST SAY THAT. After that he accepted it and agreed to read which before he wouldn't do. He then agreed to be baptized and find out for himself if this was true. The spirit for sure called John to repentance but had to use me! We laughed after but I really was grateful for the spirit and how bold it is. 

Friday we had service until three and were super busy. We saw Judy after service and had a great conversation with her. She is currently on date to be baptized the 30th of this month but won't make that date. She is amazing! Her hold up is attending church because he's constantly babysitting her grandkids. She wants to take her time as well so she can help her daughter get to church with her. It was improvement for Judy because she opened up and really showed a desire to change! After Judy we had a lesson with my pal Joseph. We brought the Miller's with us and it was a success! Sister Miller asked Joseph if he was going to make his date for baptism (January 24th) and he looked at her shocked that she had asked and with his sassy tone he said "oh yeah!" Whoop whoop! Later that night we had a great lesson with Sarah and Shane. We were more focused on Sarah who was going to be baptized along with Shane but backed down. She was honest with her concerns and she said she didnt like organized religion. I asked her what she enjoyed when she was investigating and reading the Book of Mormon. She said "I was alot happier." I just adore Sarah so much. I know that the Book of Mormon is true, that you will find peace and true happiness by reading it each day.

Saturday I was sick all afternoon (dying in my bed). It was rough. Sister Lewis is like my girl husband. She always takes care of me when I'm sick and cooks me food. The rest of the day we went out finding. We had dinner with an investigator who had been taught by the sisters for over a year. Her name is Anngie! She made us tacos and made us try something that Sister Shoemaker said "changed her life." Okay it sounds weird but oil and vinegar on your tacos...it was actually good! We later went over and saw sweet Tammy and just had a blast with her. 

Sunday we went down to Philipsburg since we hadn't been there in weeks. We got docked more miles this month so we can't make as many trips as we would like. All through church I had to get up at least five times to blow my nose since I was sick. We were then asked to say the prayers and I was so nasally so that was fun.

Week 47

Hello world. Wow what a week! Today I hit 11 months! Last week we spent our days doing tons of service! We decorated a bakery, helped at a clothes store, served food, made cookies, cleaned houses, washed laundry, washed dishes, donated clothes, delivered flowers, bought food and more. The most service I have done in one week! We didn't get to teach as many lessons since we were caught up in all the service but it was well worth it! 

Monday was a rough day for me! I lost my wallet so I had to make a bunch of calls to work things out. I was so sick from all the stress. Most of the week I had headaches and took a step back because of all the emotional distress haha. Monday night Shane (our recent covert) taught family home evening in the Pierces home! It was great! Update: Shane received his temple recommend yesterday and will heading to the temple soon! 

Tuesday we spent the morning doing our studies and helping Shane and Sarah clean their home. It looked so nice after we were done! They didn't have a working dish washer or washer for their clothes, so we took it home with us and did it for them! It really helped them out. The majority of the day we spent driving back and forth from deer lodge to helena for a fun little trip :) (sike) Sister labrum knows what I'm talking about...

The rest of the night we spent finding! 

Wednesday Sister Lewis and I gave discussions in district meeting and it was a blast. The rest of the day we taught a few lessons and found some new investigators!

Thursday was a full day of service so we were running around like crazy! We got tons of free clothes so it was the best! We weekly planned with the time that we had and then went about our day.

Friday we had a meeting in the morning then we went off to the senior center to make milkshakes! Well the ice cream machine was broken so we had to get creative. Shelly who works at the senior center went out and bought tubs of ice cream and we had to manage with that. Eventually the mixer was possessed and ice cream exploded all over me. Good times! We went over to the food pantry after and unloaded 400 pounds of elk meat. So gross! Every time we are heading out of the food pantry Dave always asks us to take meat and I'm like noooo! I think I'm becoming a vegetarian.

Saturday and Sunday were days spent with lots of finding! We spent alot of time out in the cold while it was snowing on us. God bless my parents for the coat they recently sent me. Sunday night was the Christmas Devotional and let me tell ya...I was bawling like a baby. I really love some of the things that were said. "Christ left his Heavenly home to sacrifice for us so I could for sure leave my home for a few discomforts." I appreciate all who have been there for me along the way. 

I am grateful for our Father in Heaven for His most priceless gift to us, the Savior. I hope you all are using light the world to it's fullest!

Week 46

Howdy! Well this email will probably be boring like the last one but I'm glad it's Monday! Hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving. 

We have been teaching like crazy! We ended this week with 48 lessons! We have been working on trying to find more people to teach. It was a little tough all week but Sunday evening we found six new people! It was a huge blessing! Total we found 10 new investigators for the week so we are hoping to see some potential in them!

Tuesday we had exchanges and I got to go down to Helena with Sister Jensen and SHE IS THE BOMB! I am so sad she is leaving in a few weeks! We had a great time that day and found some new people! It was a successful day! I just can't seem to escape Helena haha. It was nice though to catch a little break from my area and to see something new. 

Wednesday we had district meeting as usual and it was very uplifting! We headed off to Philipsburg after and taught like crazy! It's been hard finding investigators to teach there but we are trying! We were supposed to have a dinner in Philipsburg but it didn't end up happening so we were stuck with no dinner. Fun fact, everything closes at 4 o'clock and everything was already closed for the holidays. So we resulted in driving to the little grocery store and bought microwave food and ate that for dinner. You gotta do what cha gotta do! 

Thursday was thanksgiving. We weekly planned as usual and baked tons of cookies to hand out to people. This year was for sure the quietest thanksgiving I have ever had. It really didn't feel like thanksgiving I pretty much forgot. Sad but true. Overall we found ways that we could serve others and incorporate the new #lighttheworld initiative! 

Friday we did finding ALL DAY. We met alot of cool new (interesting) people though! 

Saturday I got sick and was dying in my bed. My medical coordinator said it was wise for me to sleep. So Saturday was a little slower. 

Sunday church was so quiet because everyone was out of town for the holidays. We spent most of that day finding and that's when our miracle investigators popped up! We had some fun run ins with people too. One lady is a member of the church and we were asked to go over and visit her. We showed up and she went off on us. We asked if there was a better time that we can could come back and she said "How about never." Things like this you just have to laugh and not let it get to you. Later that day we were out tracting and we knocked on this guy's garage door to ask if he knew where another person was. He was in the middle of butchering and let me tell ya..it was bloody and nasty. That's Montana for ya! He came out and got in our face and said "I'm Batman. That guy on tv is an imposter, I'm the real Batman." So that was interesting. We then went over to go visit a member who we haven't seen at church in a while. His girlfriend always answers the door and gives us the look. She's an older lady and she's a boss. I love her haha. Anyways she said she wasn't up for company but then she decided to come outside and warn us of some things. She then started to rant about her neighbor who she "beat the crap out of" (her words). I really couldn't hold it together. She was then putting up her fists and acting out what had happened and it was just hilarious. So basically Jann is a boss and I love her. 

Whoop whoop #lighttheworld came out! Hope you all have watched the video on lds.org! It's amazing! Get your communities involved! 

Next week will be 11 months out in the mission field...WHAAAAA. I'll send more pictures later!

Week 45

Howdy! Well after almost 11 months I think the accent people have here in Montana is starting to rub off on me. Last week was just an emotional rollercoaster...and it still continues. Sister Phillips went off to Wyoming. Yes I did cry when she left, multiple times haha. After, Sister Lewis and I headed back to Deer Lodge and got right to work! It has been a busy week. 

We had interviews and our transfer meeting last week so we had to drive up to Butte. Our poor miles are just going down the drain. Anyways nothing too exciting happened this week. Just trying to find people who are interested in learning more! Sorry my email is so short today. It's been a rough week so I'm worn out!

Week 44

"You know who I'm gonna marry? An Elder who takes care of his area book. That's what I'm looking for."

Hello friends! Well just another great week in Deer Lodge with my good ol friend Sister Phillips! We got our transfer news and Sister Phillips will be leaving me and going to Wyoming! But guess who is coming here to Deer Lodge...SISTER LEWIS! I came out with Sister Lewis and I screamed when I heard we would be companions! I'm so excited! I'm sad to see my pal Sister Phillips go but she is a great missionary and more of the world needs to see her. Moving on so I don't cry! 

Tuesday we spent the day in Philipsburg and man was it cold. We don't have alot of people to teach down there so our only option is to knock on every door possible. We tracted at night and it was freezing cold so by the time we were done we were like Jack Frost up in here. We stayed the night at a members house since we had to drive to Anaconda the next morning for district meeting. We found some cool people in Philipsburg so we hope to go back and teach them!

Wednesday we had a few good lessons and helped some investigators with family history! The ward here is very involved with family history so it's great! Three of our recent converts will be heading to the temple soon and will be taking family names with them. Noel will be baptizing her mom and Shane will be baptizing his dad. Keith is still in the process of finding names! When Sister Phillips and I were putting in our converts families information, the spirit was so strong. To see these children of God come back into the fold of God and then desire that for their family is just touching. I am hoping to make it to the temple with them! 

Thursday of course is the greatest day! Weekly planning! We spent alot of our day cleaning out the area book as well as preparing for the week to come. We did some more family history that night and as well had a lesson with Susan! We have been visiting Susan for the past couple of months now. Thursday we had a short but powerful lesson and invited her to be baptized. She was so sure and really desired to know if these things were true for herself. We can't wait to follow up with her to see how things have been with her. 

Friday we had service and found some new people! At the end of the week we found nine new investigators! We're pretty pumped! Sister Phillips and I have really just been relying on the spirit 100% and we have seen miracles from that. 

Saturday we saw Kristy and I just love Kristy. I was so happy to hear that she lived her when I showed up in Deer Lodge. She has changed so much since I last saw her in Great Falls. Saturday we had one of the best lessons I have ever had with her. She wants to change and it was so amazing to see the difference in her. The spirit changes hearts. 

Yesterday we had a great time in church. It was the primary program so we loved it! It was definitely what I needed to help keep me going. Children have a special spirit to them. I truly believe they are closer to God. That is why children need to attend church. They have alot to offer to this world. We had a bomb lesson with this guy named John yesterday as well. He has been taught by missionaries on and off for the last two years. The lesson that we had with John was the most powerful lesson I think I have ever had on my mission. I would describe it but words really can't describe the things I felt in that moment. I was a little sick the rest of the day so we went onto Facebook and did a ton of phone finding. We have found so many people just by calling them and setting up appointments! Its great! Sister Phillips finished training as well and I am so proud of her! I have learned so much from her. She truly has inspired me and I'm heart broken to split up. Alright enough of the sappy stuff...

This past week was alot different than others. For a while I felt that my testimony was at a stand still but we had so many powerful lessons that I am just so grateful for the opportunity to progress. I am grateful for the fall of Adam and Eve because I cannot imagine a life without the opportunity to grow and change. Change has been a big word for me these past few weeks. I have been often pondering on the things I need to change that will in the end goal help me return back to my Father in Heaven. Think of that for yourselves. What is it in your life that may be keeping you from progressing? If you can identify it, I invite you to take action and to change it. Our testimony that we have today or the life we live currently is not enough. We need to be progressing each day and seeking out ways we can do that. I testify that this is Christ's true church. I only know that because I took action and I prayed and asked God. I read the Book of Mormon and let it speak to me. If you are satisfied with the life you have now, I promise you it can only get better with the gospel of Jesus Christ. 

"Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you, my friends Sidney and Joseph (or Austin), your families are well; they are in mine hands, and I will do with them as seemeth me good; for in me there is all power." -D&C 100:1 

This scripture has been something that has gotten me through my mission at times where I am homesick or worried about loved ones at home. The Lord has greater power than I. Remember that he has the power to heal us, so what better person to turn to in your darkest times...

Week 43

"I've never had a bad day in my life, just some are better than others." -Dad

Goodmorning! How was everyone's week? Finally hit 10 months! This quote above is one of my all time favorite quotes from my Dad. I've been sharing it with everyone! They love it! Next week is another transfer week so we will be finding out our news this coming Sunday! I hope to stay with Sister Phillips! We have so many goals and plans for this area so I'm not ready to leave! 

This week was a little more of a challenge for us than the previous weeks. Winter is getting to us! Being a missionary in the winter is not my stuff. We've been having some challenges here and there but each day we just make the most of what we've got! We found five people this past week so we are hoping to get both of our two areas rolling again! Our two converts, Shane and Keith, are progressing quickly to the temple! Keith received the priesthood Sunday and interviewed for his recommend! Shane has started family history work and is as well receiving the priesthood this coming Sunday and getting his temple recommend! Shane is super excited because the first person he will be taking to the temple is his dad's name. I am so pumped! This is the beauty of missionary work, I love it.

We had lots of service this week, more than usual! I love service! Sister Phillips and I also got our hair cut and we regret it haha. She got four inches cut off and I'm a wimp and only did two. Our past district meeting was awesome. I really had never felt so grateful to be a missionary. I've been thinking alot on how fast time goes by and how it's important to treasure the time we have here on earth. Life really is just but a small moment. This is our time to work hard, grow in faith and so much more. Remember that everyday is precious! 

Yesterday during relief society we did this activity where there were 50 things on the list and by the end of the list we were only allowed to have one thing left. On this list were things we have like: running water, food, cars, etc. Other things on the list were more spiritual things such as: church, temple, priesthood, testimony, etc. By the end of the list most of us had the word testimony left. Something that was touching to me was Moroni's story. Near the end of Moroni's life all he had left was the brass plates, which he was asked to bury. When he had nothing left, no family, no plates, he had his testimony of the truthfulness of this gospel and Jesus Christ. When we may think we have nothing left we have one of the most prized possessions and that is our testimony. Work daily to strengthen your testimony and to keep building your faith. It is not enough to be satisfied with what your testimony is like now. We need to constantly be nourishing our testimony. 

I am grateful to be a missionary. As much as I love and adore my family, I want to stay forever. It's hard work and there are disappointing days but missionary work affects the ETERNITIES. This month I invite you to daily gives thanks for the blessings God has given you. Look for ways you can express your gratitude. Serving God's children is always a good way to go!

Be righteous! I love you all with every bit of me!

Week 42

"Nephi touched the butt, wait I meant to say Nemo touched the butt." -Sister Phillips

Goodmorning! Wow what a busy but eventful week! We found six new investigators and we are so excited! Shane was baptized and confirmed a member of the church and we couldn't be happier! From being in Deer Lodge only a month I have seen so much growth in Shane. He was that guy that had tons of piercings and was good with the color black. He underestimated himself for sure. The day of his interview he showed us that he had just taken out the last piercing he had. Prior to this he said he would never take it out because of how much money it costed him but I know that the spirit softened his heart. Sister Phillips and I bought Shane a white church shirt that he did not own and he wore it to his baptism as well as to church. He said "I own no white and I look terrible in white" but he showed up and said "I actually like this color on me." The color white is pure and symbolizes to me holiness. We are now in the process of getting Shane to the temple to partake of more blessings that Heavenly Father wants him to receive. 

We had exchanges last week and it was so fun! Both Sister Jensen and Sister Kezele stayed in our area to help us more with our work which was much needed. I was paired off with Sister Kezele for the day and I just absolutely adore her. She has always inspired me since the beginning of my mission. She has a good heart and a huge desire to serve even when things around her may not be the most stable in her life. She's courageous.  

Wednesday is our day in Philipsburg so we went down to Anaconda first and had our district meeting. We needed some McDonalds after that hectic time with the Elders let me tell ya. So one of our investigators invited us to go sapphire hunting and we were like um we can't do that unless it's a monday. He never gave up. We ended up going and he payed for us to get in and it was so awkward, we looked like we were on a date. Sister wives up in here. We attempted to teach him while doing all of this as well. 

Thursday we had lots of service! One of our service activities was helping a member fix up her trailer that she had five cats in. Funny thing is that Sister Phillips is allergic to cats so the whole time she was wheezing haha. The things you do for service! 

Friday we had a harvest dinner down in Philipsburg, the branch we cover, and it was so fun! This past week we have ate so much so every morning we have been getting up to run to help us feel better about ourselves. It's torture! 

Saturday was the good ol Shanes baptism! I gave the talk on baptism and Sister Phillips gave the talk on the Holy Ghost and it was an awesome day! The rest of the day went on with studies, service and some lessons! We went later that night to an investigator named Tammy who has been going through some things recently. When we showed up she was expressing how she felt unsafe and how her anxiety was going through the roof. At the end of the lesson we asked her if there was anything we could do for her and she said "I feel alot calmer now and better...you girls did it." We then went on to explain the power of the Spirit and it was just awesome how she was able to recognize the difference she felt. 

Yesterday was quite crazy. We had to first go to Shanes confirmation in the Deer Lodge ward then we had an hour and a half drive to Philipsburg. We were asked to speak in church so we were in a hurry all morning. We had a wedding dinner yesterday and we were like noooooo more food. The day went on with some great lessons and finding some awesome people! The work is really moving along here! We are pooped from the week but the busy days never stop! 

Today we were asked to attend a small funeral service for one of our part member families. This family is absolutely amazing. A couple Mondays ago they had asked us if we would come over to talk with them. My selfish self first thought "man it's preparation day though." When we arrived in the hotel room that they were soon to be kicked out of I saw the most beautiful image that I can never forget. We were showing a video called "Mountains to climb." In the middle of that video I looked over at a father who had just spent his last $7 to buy food for his children. The young daughter and her dad were hugging and she looked up at her dad and said "I love you" and he responded back with "I love you too." I was humbled in that moment realizing that this life is not about me. My mission is not about me, it's about others. The mother was 16 weeks along in her pregnancy when she lost the baby. Today we will go to be there by their side as a member will dedicate their child's grave. Something touching about the dedication of a burial spot is that "the place will be hallowed and protected until the Resurrection." When I read this I got chills. The priesthood holder who will be dedicating the grave will stand at the head of the grave and face the east because when Christ comes, he will come from the east. 

I have a testimony of the Plan of Salvation, that those who have passed on we will see again. That is the blessing of the temple. I am touched and will forever be grateful for this gospel and the blessings that come with it. 

Happy Halloween eve! Tomorrow we have to be in by six for safety purposes so Sister Phillips and I have party plans!
